Istanbul Airport Attack: What You Need to Know About Travel Insurance, Says Squaremouth

a leading travel insurance comparison site, launched the Istanbul
Airport Terrorist Attack and Travel Insurance Information Center
answer travelers’ questions about coverage for the June 28 attack at
Istanbul’s Atatürk airport.

I Still Buy Travel Insurance For Istanbul?

You can no longer buy a policy with coverage for the June 28 terrorist
attack, but travel insurance is still available for upcoming trips to
Turkey, including coverage for future attacks. However, some policies
exclude Terrorism coverage if a prior attack occurred in the city within
the past 90 days.

I Cancel My Trip to Istanbul?

The U.S. Department of State declared the attack an act of terrorism,
meaning the event meets the standard travel insurance definition of
terrorism. You may be covered to cancel your trip to Istanbul if you had
a policy in place before June 28 and meet your policy’s other
requirements for Terrorism coverage.

If I’m Afraid to Travel After the Attack?

Unfortunately, fear of traveling is never a covered reason to cancel on
a travel insurance policy. Travelers with the Cancel For Any Reason
upgrade can cancel their trip without providing a reason. However, this
upgrade comes with a number of stipulations.

“Overall, we have seen fewer customers insuring trips to Turkey this
year,” said Squaremouth spokesperson Rachael Taft, noting a 58% decrease
in customers purchasing policies for Turkey compared to last year. “For
travelers who are going to Istanbul this summer, the information center
can help them understand the coverage available.”
