TEP Offers Shade Trees for Just $5 Each Through Improved Efficiency Program

TUCSON, Ariz.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Tucson Electric Power has improved its longstanding shade tree program
to make it easier and more affordable for customers with a green thumb
to save some green.

With the TEP Trees for You program, residential customers can purchase
up to three native and low-water trees per year for just $5 each – down
from $8 each last year. A limited number of 15-gallon trees will be made
available to commercial customers for $15 each.

“In addition to adding beauty, trees help conserve energy by shading
buildings, streets and cars and reducing the effects of urban heat
islands,” said Jessica Vega, TEP’s Trees for You Program Manager. “Trees
also control storm water runoff, soil erosion and wind, and they improve
air quality while providing a habitat for wildlife.”

Customers can now quickly and easily order trees by logging in to My
Account at tep.com.
Available varieties include drought-tolerant, native trees like velvet
mesquites and low-water seasonal trees like pistachio and pomegranate
trees. Civano Nursery will provide all trees and operate a “tree care
hotline” for participants who need planting advice and guidance.
Varieties that have few or no thorns and stay green year-round will be

Participants will be notified through My Account when their trees are
available for pickup from Civano Nursery and other local nurseries,
which will assist with distribution. Nursery employees will help load
trees for transport, provide planting instructions and answer questions.
Participants can pay an additional charge to local nurseries for
delivery and planting.

Trees must be planted within 15 feet to the west, east or south of
participants’ homes and buildings to provide shade during the summer
months. For safety, participants should dial 811 to call Arizona Blue
Stake at least two working days before planting trees so that TEP and
other utilities can mark the locations of underground lines. This free
service – which is required by state law – can help tree planters to
avoid making contact with underground power lines and other potential
safety hazards.

The Trees for You program is part of TEP’s expanded energy efficiency
(EE) offerings for residential and commercial customers in 2016. New
programs include an effort to help schools improve their energy
efficiency and incentives for residential customers who improve the
efficiency of existing heating and cooling systems with “advanced tune
up” measures.

TEP’s EE programs help customers achieve significant energy savings and
environmental benefits. Residential and commercial customers
participating in TEP’s EE programs have saved enough energy to power
nearly 84,000 homes for a year. These savings help TEP work toward the
goals in Arizona’s Energy Efficiency Standard, which calls on utilities
to achieve cumulative energy savings of 22 percent by 2020.

All of TEP’s customer-funded EE programs are reviewed and approved by
the Arizona Corporation Commission. The programs have been proven to be
cost-effective for all customers – not just those who participate – by
reducing TEP’s long-term need for new energy resources. Participation
helps to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels, resulting in reduced air
emissions and water usage.

TEP provides safe, reliable electric service to approximately 417,000
customers in Southern Arizona. For more information, visit tep.com. TEP
and its parent company, UNS Energy, are subsidiaries of Fortis Inc.,
which owns utilities that serve more than 3 million customers across
Canada and in the United States and the Caribbean. To learn more, visit fortisinc.com.
